Legendary History and Power
Of 159 Georgia Counties, Hart County is the only one named after a woman. The Legend has it that Nancy Hart served as a spy for General Elijah Clarke during the Revolutionary War, occasionally disguised as a man. The neighboring Indians had great respect for Nancy Hart, calling her “War Woman,”(“Wahatchee” in the Cherokee language) and gave that name to a creek adjacent to her cabin, now memorialized as a State Park on State Highway Route 17. Nancy Hart was related to Daniel Boone, and to Colonel John Dooley, and is a legend for her amazing bravery and backwoods toughness.
Aside from Nancy, the area now hosts one of the most powerful hydro dam systems in the South: Hartwell Dam. Hartwell Lake is a man-made lake bordering Georgia and South Carolina on the Savannah, Tugaloo, and Seneca Rivers. Hartwell Lake and Dam is the second Corps of Engineers project to be built in the Savannah River Basin, and on average produces 470,000 megawatt hours. The first, J. Strom Thurmond Lake and Dam, was completed in 1952. A third project, Richard B. Russell Lake and Dam was completed in 1985. Congress authorized Hartwell in 1950 and construction began in October 1955. The project was completed in 1963 at a cost of more than $89 million.
