Wastewater Treatment Project Overview

JDI’s pipefitting team has completed another successful wastewater treatment process project. This one is with a chemical manufacturer in Upstate, SC for their wastewater process discharge system.

The original system was of an antiquated design and featured a PH-probe that was positioned downstream of the flowmeter. Our scope was to get the the PH-probe upstream of the flow, and to create a diversion to reroute if need be.

The project involves not only piping, but also replacing an entire pump system that had lost efficiency and was not meeting performance expectations. The client was excited to have us back for more, as they knew we could plan and execute according to their schedule needs.

One of the major factors in this piping project is that the wastewater treatment processing plant would need to be shutdown for an extremely short time-span. This allowed for the new pumps and piping to be connected, and then powered on. Knowing that, JDI’s pipefitting team planned the project in three different phases to limit the downtime.

Phase 1 of the project involved prefabricating the carbon diversion line, outfall piping, and creating new foundations for the pipe stands. The team worked from section to section, placing the stands first on the foundations, then working on the piping.

Phase 2 involved demolishing the first old pump and preparing the site for the new pumps that have air-operated valves, creating a new pad foundation for the pumps, and bolting together the components. Each piping section was placed on a temporary pipe stand at a higher elevation between each permanent stand.

An important part of this phase also was that the wastewater treatment plant needed to stay in operation, so we removed one of the older pumps and placed a new pump in its place to keep them in service.

The final and 3rd phase was demolition and installation of the second pump, and joining the new carbon pipes together with the wastewater system and pumps. Our mechanical team placed and assembled the pumps while the pipefitters worked very quickly to connect the piping. As the last weld was completed, the client’s PLC team began to setup the logic for the air-operated valves timing.
