Automotive Steel Package

Pits & Initial Steel Setup

Structural Steel Assembled

Automotive Steel Package: Overview

To start this project, JDI Industrial Services lays out the five pit locations in the production area of this automotive manufacturer’s facility. The client contracts us to install all structural steel surrounding and within the pits.

We are installing over 200 structural steel beams, including 50 large components. The largest is a W24 x 76 beam. Seventy-five of these beams will support the equalizer pit.

This project supports our client’s End-of-Line (EOL) production. Our automotive client will use these pits to test vehicle loads and balances before releasing vehicles to the public.

Automotive Steel Package: Phase I Details

This time-sensitive project must be completed in seven weeks. Our team follows a strict schedule to deliver on time. After approval, our project manager reviews the site and develops a plan for the rigging team.

First, our team mobilizes the Broderson IC-200 crane, which has a lifting capacity of 13.6 Tons. JDI’s certified crane operator, ironworkers, and professional rigging specialist sets up the turntable layout.

By week two, next, we drill holes for the turntable embeds to be able to secure the beams later.

Once week three begins, our crew completes preparation for the roller tester pit and turntable area. When the turntable steel arrives, we install the structural steel around the pit and prepare the slideslip and equalizer pit covers. Afterwards, we move to week four with our ironworkers completing the turntable steel installation and beginning work on the roller tester steel. Sequentially, we prepare the equalizer pit and proceed to the brake tester pit.

Automotive Steel Package: Phase II Details

By the fifth week, we receive the slideslip and equalizer steel packages, which include structural steel and designated covers for each pit. We then begin installing the automotive steel package for the equalizer pit and brake tester. Our master rigger and crane operator carefully lift and lower the steel beams into place.

The ironworkers apply the last installations of epoxy and bolt together the beams. Finally, our rigging team installs the grates, finishing the overall automotive steel package project. With extra time to spare, we carefully review all work to ensure everything is secure and properly installed to code.

Project Results

Our work at the automotive manufacturing plant totals over 3,000 man-hours, with more than 200 steel beams and within approximately 4,259 square feet of space.

Ultimately, this automotive steel package allows our manufacturing client to test their vehicles and finish the goal to begin production.
