In 1895, D.K. Norris opened the first cotton mill, which was called Cateechee Mill, in Pickens County. From that point forward, cotton mills and manufacturing have been an important way of life for the people of Pickens County.
Following the growth of those late 19th-century mills, the area became a part of the fabric of what once was called the “textile capital of the world”. However, since the late 1990s, textiles became displaced by a wide variety of economic shifts and new industries including automotive, electronics manufacturing, and engineering R&D firms.
