BorgWarner PEMB Steel Erection

Phase I – Grading & Calibration

Phase II – PEMB Steel Column and Beam Erections

Phase III – Installing Girders, Metal Roofing, & Planning Interior Layout

Phase IV – Steel Erection & Connecting PEMB to Facility

Steel Erection Project Overview

Our client, BorgWarner, tasks JDI with creating a new building that can expand the capabilities of their maintenance, repair, and operations team. This MRO addition involves adding a new foundation, performing a PEMB steel erection, and attaching the new building to their existing one.

JDI’s iron workers and project management team layout the new area, create the foundation and erect the steel. Following this, the team connects the steel erection to the existing building’s structure, and completely encapsulate it with metal siding and roofing.

BorgWarner is very happy with JDI and continues to work with us. Since 2020 and the tornado incident, we perform regularly for their facility. This MRO addition now allows them to double their fulfillment abilities.

PEMB Steel Erection: Initial Phases

Our project team from JDI is well-versed in creating Pre-Engineered Metal Building structures when clients need additions. The iron workers and riggers we employ for jobs like this make the process seamless and easy, and more importantly, safe.

This project work begins with creating the drawings in our fabrication shop, where our team of steel fabricators begins fabricating the different parts necessary. The team has a task of creating over 73 major steel components, then delivering them to the jobsite via truck and trailer.

While the JDI fabrication shop is creating the pieces, the project manager, engineer, and superintendent layout the area for the construction. The superintendent along with the iron workers and master rigger begin to get the site on grade, place concrete, and mark the column positions.

Following the foundational elements, our iron workers begin receiving the steel packages from the fabrication team. They assemble the steel in the laydown area to make it easier to pick and place later.

The team has made all the measurements and begin to lift the steel columns first, then the beams secondly, and finally begin to place the roofing on after all the first phase steel erection is complete. This creation of the the new building is ready for the second phase: connecting the new building to the existing one.

PEMB Construction: Final Steel Erections & Tie-In

Now that the new PEMB structure is in place, it needs to be connected to the existing building. This build includes two 24′ steel columns that have to insert through the adjacent building’s roof, then anchor to its foundation.

Our master rigging specialist works with the crane operator and our journeyman iron worker to perform the critical lifts. First, he signals, communicates, and his team effectively places the columns safely where they need to be.

Secondly, he and his team below anchor the column bases into the foundation. Thirdly, his steel erection team outside then readies to critically lift two 41′ steel beams that joins the columns together between both buildings. The team brings the pieces together via crane and bolts them together. This completes the steel erection for BorgWarner’s PEMB project.
