This carbon baffle maintenance project is for a paper manufacturer, one of the largest producers of books in the United States. They are a leading manufacturer and distributor of magazines, catalogs, office products, and school commemorative products.
Like many manufacturers and producers in the paper industry, their facility takes a lot of wear and tear over time and needs maintenance and services. JDI’s task at the facility is to replace the baffles to ensure their systems can properly filter their end product.

This project request begins with an inspection of the tank that filters the client’s product. The system involves air running through the filtration media, and the carbon media absorbs the ink from the printing process. Within time, the process leaves the flooring, screening, and baffles inside the tanks deteriorated from long-term exposure.
The process requires our crew to get inside and cut out the old components and weld new 16” sheets of carbon metal to the seams of the tank.
They begin with the removal of all access covers from the existing tank. Because this is a confined space, we must use a coppus forced-air fan to feed oxygen into the opening to provide the crew with clean, breathable air. Once the air is ready, we then lower each welder in, and rotate their shifts to keep them safe.
Our welders begin placing brand new 1/4″ thick 16″ sheets of carbon steel into the tanks sides. In record time, we complete the project efficiently and effectively during the short shutdown period. This new sheet metal will last this facility for the next 20 years under normal operating conditions.
The five-man JDI Industrial maintenance and fabrication crew completed the work on four tanks, making JDI the first company to be able to take care of the work and meet the client’s budget and scope needs.
Local industrial facilities like them recommend us not just for carbon baffle maintenance, but other industrial welding maintenance projects as well.
