Phase I – Initial Structure Rigging and Lift-off
Paper Plant Galvanized Access Stairs
Project Overview: Galvanized Stairs
JDI installs a new set of galvanized stairs for a waste area at Greif’s Upstate, SC manufacturing location. Their maintenance team, needing stairs for roof access, now is able to service their RTUs (Rooftop Units).
Prior to the stairs, the lack of access demanded a lot of risk and time due to the location of the RTUs.
The access point also must have forklift guards in placement around it on the loading dock. This concurrently allows the operators below to move the paper products while also giving service techs a safe place to enter and exit.

Project Details: Galvanized Stairs
To meet the demand for safe access, JDI was contracted to make a custom set of fabricated galvanized stairs within our fabrication shop. The stairway needed to be 16 ft tall, have standard stair treads, handrails, mid-rails, and toe-kicks.
After the fab shop creates the staircase and ensures everything is to spec, we deliver the stair set in two pieces. Upon delivery, we place the set on the client’s platform and used a telehandler to setup the stairs.
Our on-site steel erection crew rigs and positions the platform first, then preps the base for drilling and grouting. Next, we erect and install the platform by anchoring it with bolts and 10,000 PSI curing epoxy. Afterwards once the grout has had time to cure, stairs lift and set into final positioning onto the platform.
Once the crew bolt together the stairs and platform, we grout concrete to the level platform base. Lastly, we ensure additional safety by core-drilling into the existing concrete dock and installing seven bollards around the platform. These bollards will protect it from the heavy bundle stacks and operations nearby.
Tasks Included
- Welding & Galvanizing All Stair Components In-House
- Installing Pre-Fabricated Steel Package
- Rigging and Lifting All Parts with Certified Rigging Team & Telehandler
- Grout and create Concrete Base for Stairs & Platform
- Install & Paint Seven Bollards to Protect Stairs & Staff
Results
The client is happy to have galvanized access stairs to their roof to perform routine services. Finally, this allows them to have close and safe access, reducing maintenance time and risk.
