Subdeck Motor Control Panels

Control Panel Buildout

Subdeck Motor Control Panels Installed

Project Overview: Subdeck Motor Control Panels

This subdeck motor control panels project began with seven decks originally, and was downsized to a six deck system. JDI’s Electrical Services evaluate the project’s needs and its purpose.

Essentially our electrical team has to replace the control panels from the original seventh deck. This new control cabinet build then attaches to the sixth deck, which connects to and drives the other decking.

Rebuilding the panel, connecting it to the decking, and subsequently connecting the lighting, allows it to operate. As they move from section to section removing roofing, this decking allows for cover of the facility’s operations.

Project Details: Control Panel Installation

The electrical team began by getting the control panels for this project and gathering the controls, wiring, and hardware.

To start, our electricians put boots on the crane power rails, connecting to the 60 AMP disconnect which connects to a transformer to supply 480v. They install two 100 AMP breakers, exterior handles for disconnect, and fuses.

Thereafter they install two 480 to 120 transformers to provide power, one for the AC and one for control voltage. Previously, the original wiring was for a VFD and a brake which feeds the motor starters. For that reason, we have to replace them with a reversible contactor to make the panel operational.

With attention to controls, JDI also must replace the remote control with a two-button pendant. Concurrently, we install a spider box and a lighting contactor to power on the lights underneath.

Our superintendent and helper connect the lights and motors for the decks, and mount the cabinets and transformers. Finally, we troubleshoot and start-up the subdeck motor control panels to operate the system.

Tasks Included

  • Install (2) 100 AMP Breakers
  • Connect 60 AMPs
  • Connect 575v to 480v transformer
  • Provide Power to Lighting, AC, Controls, and Decking Motors
  • Spider Box and Lighting Contactor
  • Trouble-shoot & Start-up

Results

Consequently, this electrical work allows the client to work on removing the roof while having ample coverage. Because the subdeck motor control panels are complete, the team therefore can begin work on a threader and lighting project for the facility.
