JDI Industrial began working for this adhesives client as a T&M contractor. Initially, this project starts as a five-member crew doing demo, piping, and installation, which grew into something much more.
Once the initial phase of work was complete, the client brought JDI into their second phase to work with their GC division to give a price with a competitive bid. After winning the bidding process, and meeting all the welding and rigging certifications, we work over a period of months to deliver a $1.4 million structural project.
This project for 3M creates better support for a multi-million-dollar operation so they can maintain manufacturing efficiency. To see more project details, keep reading below.
JDI’s fabrication team initializes the project by creating miscellaneous structural members, mezzanines, machine supports, and staircases to allow the field team at the plant to expand and create a space for new manufacturing processes.
First, the initial phase involves demoing the existing structures, which JDI is to remove the existing columns and beams in the new construction area, along with two existing exterior steel frame structures, as well as a steel platform, grating, and stairs.
After this is complete, we begin phase two and fabricate and install a galvanized stair section and platform. Following this, we begin fabricating and installing forklift barriers, bollards, and guardrails around the stairs and new structure.
Next, our fabrication and mechanical team works on creating openings in the roofing above the work area, so that we can install new fans. This part involves installing new bracing for the roof as well as for the fans. After this is complete, we begin the process for installing the majority of the 3M structural steel package.
JDI install the seven new columns with all steel coated to 3M’s specs before arriving onsite. Once anchored to the floor and base, we work to perform a dock enclosure installation. We erect all steel and make all the connections specific to the drawing package.
Afterwards, work begins on the steel frame openings for the structure. This includes new C8x11.5’s as well as all connection plates and bolts. This project also includes separate mobilizations for a 100 ton crane. Our crane is set to pull the existing AHU columns out of the roof and to place all fan supports.
The JDI Field Superintendent led a 17-member crew on-site, from welders, crane ops, riggers, and skilled craft laborers to deliver the project on time and under budget.
